Boxing as a workout
Boxing is an amazing cardiovascular workout. It also builds muscle, burns fat, and improves hand-eye coordination. Resistance training is always a good idea for any workout regimen and boxing has you covered in that arena too. The impact and force delivered through the hand and arms during a workout trigger your body to increase bone density. So, boxing has many advantages as a stand-alone workout routine.

The great thing about boxing at PTC Combat fitness is you can learn the techniques, movements, and skills at your own pace. You don’t have to spare with anyone and our instructors are here to help you learn the correct fundamentals. Once you understand the basics of boxing you can enjoy an amazing workout by yourself on one of our heavy bags. Lastly, the art of boxing is a fundamental form of self-defense. It is hard to beat a workout that can incorporate self-defense and check off all the boxes that we have mentioned above.
Boxing Skills
Stance
Is there an “ideal” or “perfect” boxing stance. No, however, there are the basics! Once you master the basics you can start to develop your own stance that compliments your unique attributes and maximizes your full potential.
Footwork
The ability to move around while throwing punches and conversely having punches thrown at you is fundamental to your success in this sport. Learn how to move and become a better boxer!
Guard
While throwing punches is generally associated with boxing, the great boxer realizes that they have to defend themselves as well. Learning how to defend yourself against punches is just as important as throwing punches.
Jab
Though not a sexy as the other punches, the jab is probably the most effective punch in your boxing arsenal. Unfortunately, throwing an effective jab or using it to set up other punches is becoming a lost art. Learn the mechanics and strategy of this punch to begin building the foundation of all your other attacks.
Cross
One of the most powerful punches in all boxing, this strike typically uses the individual’s strong hand from the furthest distance from their opponent, hence its punching power. Due to the distance, it has to travel it is most effective when it is setup with other strikes like the jab.
Hook
An extremely versatile strike to have in your arsenal. The hook can be thrown with extreme power and from different angles. You can throw it high to the head or low to the body depending on what your opponent gives you. This was one of Mike Tyson’s favorite weapons when he was the king of the boxing world!
Uppercut
A well-placed uppercut is usually trouble for the person receiving the punch. If performed correctly the punch uses a tremendous amount of body mechanics and can deliver exceptional power. This punch has been a key weapon for a lot of strikers in MMA when they compete against grapplers as it keeps a grappler honest and cautious from “shooting” in low for a takedown.

BJJ was developed so that the smaller, less athletic, individual can survive, progress, and then capitalize on their opponents’ weaknesses. Understanding how to grapple with another individual and using technique and leverage is an invaluable tool for any child. We specialize in teaching young individuals how to use their body most effectively with BJJ.

Cardio Kickboxing is a true full-body workout! This class is for those tired of the “normal” workout routines that become so boring after a very short time or anyone that wants to push themselves. Combining boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, calisthenics, body weight exercises, and more this class is full of exercises to keep your mind and body ready for more. If you are tired of running on a treadmill, then check out this class. We promise you won’t be bored!

Muay Thai Kickboxing
Referred to as the “art of eight limbs,” this effective martial art has grown in popularity with the rise of MMA and its unquestionable efficacy in delivering strikes to your opponent. Our Muay Thai classes focus on technique, drills, and light sparring to develop an effective overall striking system. If you have ever been interested in learning a striking martial art that can be applied in most situations then this class is for you.

Referred to by other names like circuit training, CrossFit®, and high-intensity training, this class has it all. A full-body workout with functional exercises that not only get your body looking good but also encourage functional strength for everyday life.
