Muay Thai

What is Muay Thai?

Developed in Thailand and often referred to as “Thai Boxing”  this martial art has rapidly become one of the fastest-growing forms of martial arts in the world.

You may have heard Muay Thai referred to as the “art of eight limbs” because while it does incorporate some traditional boxing concepts like a jab or parrying defenses, it also utilizes other parts of the body to deliver devastating kicks, knees, and elbows which make it extremely applicable to mixed martial art (MMA) competitions as well as general self-defense.

When was Muay Thai Developed?

Initially developed in the 16th century Muay Thai really got going during the 19th when King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) took a personal interest in the sport.  During this time in Thailand, there wasn’t much war, and soldiers (along with civilians) used Muay Thai as a way to stay in shape and practice self-defense.

Muay Thai Classes

At PTC Combat Fitness, we focus on technique, timing, and the development of body mechanics needed to successfully utilize Muay Thai strikes.  Our training methods include drills, where techniques are practiced with a partner under the supervision of our Muay Thai coach.  We incorporate movement to mimic a real situation and light sparring to give our students a sense of actual combat – however, we have individuals that will go as hard as you want 😉

Common MUay Thai Strikes

ROundhouse Kick

Roundhouse Kick Muay Thai

A staple in any Muay Thai training session or fight, this kick is usually aimed at an opponent’s lead leg or head.  When targeting the leg this kick can be deceptively painful.  This kick aims to traumatize an attacker’s leg by targeting the sciatic nerve that runs down the leg.  Multiple hits to the leg causes inflammation in the area, which in turn creates more pressure (i.e. pain) on the sciatic nerve.

Knee Strike

One of the most destructive strikes in all of the combat sports, the knee strike is a powerful weapon for when two opponents clinch together.  Moreover, this strike can be used as a deterrent from would-be grapplers trying to take the fight to the ground.

Elbow Strike

Elbow strike Muay Thai

This simple strike is one of the most effective attacks at any range and for any body type.  Because our elbows are extremely boney and durable they can be launched from anywhere in a fight without much concern for injuring oneself, as opposed to breaking one’s hand throwing a punch.
